At Vital we make a concerted effort to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. To cause damage would be against our ethos of looking after health and wellbeing, using local suppliers and … would take away from the positive impact we have elsewhere.
We have a number of initiatives in place, one of which includes working with Paper Round. Paper Round is a company that works with businesses to deal with waste in an efficient and environmentally friendly way, whilst measuring what and how much is being recycled, so we can track the difference we are making.
Our Artillery Row store has recently been awarded by Paper Round, for recycling 90% of their waste in 2015 and saving 15,050kg of carbon dioxide in the process.
So what exactly are we doing?
We create electricity
Whilst we do our best to recycle as much as possible, there is inevitably some that we can’t. To keep help stay as green as possible, all the waste we produce that cannot be recycled is taken to a specialised plant that converts it to energy, meaning we are reducing our reliance on fossil fuels for power.
If you live in London there’s a good chance that Vital is helping to power your home!
We transform leftover food into
bio-gas and organic fertiliser
In our business it is a given that a small amount of food will be wasted, as part of our core value system is to buy all our stock so it’s as fresh as possible. 2% of it doesn’t make it into your salad or soup, but instead of binning it we send it to be processed by an anaerobic digestion system. The gases produced by this process are harvested and used for energy, and the leftover matter is used for organic fertiliser that is used to grow more food. The circle of life in action!
We only use 100% recycled
plastic and cardboard
This is a no-brainer really. In order to give you the fresh food you love, it needs to be contained somehow, otherwise things would get messy. So we use plastic for our salads and other fresh products and cardboard for our coffees and soups. We get all our packaging from suppliers who create all their products from recycled materials, so we’re not using up any more trees.
We don’t send
anything to landfill
So our waste is 100% diverted away from landfill, we recycle as much as we can and we are helping our local environment by treating our wastage as a resource, but we’re not resting on our laurels. Vital Ingredient will continue to look for the best technologies and processes to ensure that any waste material returns to life in the most useful and environmentally friendly way. We will continue to reduce the waste we produce and consistently monitor our procedures to keep wastage to a minimum.
